General Tips
Should I do Standard or Personal Vows?
This is completely up to you and how you express love, some couples are just fine with doing the traditional “repeat after me” vows. These vows typically sound something like: “I, (name), take you, (name), to be my (wife/husband), to have and to hold, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.” If you want to be more expressive, try personal vows!
How long should my Vows be?
We recommend that you time your vows when writing them. The perfect length is anywhere between 2-3 minutes. Don’t feel pressured to fill pages and pages with your words of love! Short and sweet is just as touching.
Themes to Include
Religion
Are you and your partner religious? You can certainly include verbiage that is true to your spirituality whether that’s mentions of God, Family, Holy Spirit, whatever works for your beliefs!
Humor
If you two pride yourself on your humor, use it! This is a perfect place to include an inside joke between you two. Be careful here — if you choose to include guests, they won’t understand your inside jokes, so limit the amount that you include.
Compliments
Tell you partner what you appreciate and love about them! Let them know what you enjoy that is uniquely true to them. They will be flattered by how observant you are. Let’s be honest, we don’t express gratitude for our partners enough!
Promises
Now is a great time to recommit to them and to yourself your goals in the relationship. No couple is perfect, but this is a time when you can remind yourself what you hope to be as a spouse.
Quotes
If you’re at a loss for words, quotes can help kick start your creativity! Find a favorite poem, lyric, or quote that is especially touching for you to build your vows around.
